Thomas Clarkson’s campaign chest

A bigger picture

Many people campaigned to end transatlantic slavery, using a variety of methods. Some, like Clarkson, produced images and artefacts as evidence of the cruel treatment of enslaved people. Wedgwood’s factory famously created a medallion bearing the image of a kneeling man in chains, and the motto ‘Am I not a man and a brother.’ This image was adopted by the Committee for the Abolition of Slavery.
